From this ayah in the Qur’an. the two words that have been so erroneously understood is the word qawamah, and daraba. Muslims have misused this ayah to justify their misdeeds and the disbelievers have used it to spread false misconceptions about Islam.
Dr Rida Beshir explains in detail the proper understanding of these words from many books of tafsir and most importantly, how the Prophet SAW applied them with his family.
