The era of the four imāms was a turning point in Islāmic history. It was a time shaped by a firm commitment to the Islāmic identity and an openness to change. The Islāmic identity provided the cultural foundation and the basis for intellectual pursuits. At the same time, the era of the four imāms was a time of accelerated social change due to the number of new nations and cultures which had entered into Islām, often in their entirety. It was also a time of increased cultural interaction and cross-fertilization between the Muslim world and neighbouring nations. The codification of the four legal schools was a declaration of a new start, requiring dedication to following a tradition, a renewal of allegiance, and the affirmation of sound methodological principles.

PREFACE
Khadija and Aisha had a special position among the wives of God’s Messenger; while the former was like the royal vizier in Mecca for fifteen years before the revelation, the latter fulfilled the same duty during the Medina years and later on. When they are considered in terms of the mission that they performed, each of them had the proper qualifications. God Almighty provided the Messenger of God with a strong character: in Mecca where belief, self-sacrifice and bravery were so necessary, He gave him Khadija; in Medina where the requirements of knowledge, intelligence and reasoning were felt, He bestowed him Aisha.

Tafsir Al-Jalalayn (set of 2 vol)
This book, “Tafsir al-Jalalayn,” meaning “The Commentary of the Two Jalals”, is named after its two authors: Jalalu’d-Din al-Mahalli (1389-1459), who wrote half of it, and his student, Jalalu’d-Din as-Suyuti (1445-1505), one of the greatest Muslim scholars of all, who completed it after al-Mahalli’s death. For half a millennium Tafsir al-Jalalayn has been considered the essential first step in the study of the meanings of the Quran by teachers and students throughout the Islamic world. Although it is among the shortest and simplest of the complete commentaries, it is at the same time both wide-ranging and profound. This translation by Muhammed Anis Gad Khalil gives non-Arabic speakers access to one of the seminal works of classical tafsir literature. It is hoped that it will prove a valuable aid to the correct understanding of the Quranic Revelation throughout the English-speaking world.
