According to the Qur’an, he was sent as a mercy for humankind and as the best possible example for them. Learning about Prophet Muhammad’s life has been difficult for non-Muslims, as there are not many authentic sources of knowledge or biographies written about him for non-Muslim readers. Biographical accounts by Westerners are inevitably biased, unreliable or tainted with prejudices and Orientalist fallacies. Khadija and Aisha had a special position among the wives of God’s Messenger; while the former was like the royal vizier in Mecca for fifteen years before the revelation, the latter fulfilled the same duty during the Medina years and later on. After the publication of Goldziher’s Muhammedanische Studien in 1890, the reliability of Muslim sources became controversial. This stance was intensified by the publication of Schacht’s The Origins of Muhammadan Jurisprudence, in which he claimed that none of the Hadith literature is authentic. In this book, Dr. Muhammad Saeed Mitwally successfully challenges some of the problems raised by the pessimistic attitude.
